Description: Short description: She was born on August 27, 1889, in Castleton, Vermont. She grew up in New York, graduated from Vassar College in 1912 and received a masters degree from Columbia University in 1914. She is best known for the 1939 bestseller The Freedom Tree, on which the 1940 film The Howard of Virginia was based. She also wrote the novel Adventure in the Wild (1946), based on the true story of the explorer John Peter Salling.
